Tuscaloosa, AL

7.27.2010

Today’s ride was pretty boring, mainly because I was riding in a van the whole way. I still took a bunch of cool pictures though.

The friendship visit was a at a center that specialized in care for people with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy, or CP, causes a stiffening of the muscles that makes it difficult for those who are affected to walk, and can also inhibit the muscles used in speech. As a result, many people with this condition are confined to wheelchairs and have trouble speaking, even if they are 100% there mentally. I made my rounds and spoke with a bunch of the participants, even though many of them weren’t able to communicate back. You could usually tell that they were listening though.

After our friendship visit we headed over to dinner at the Omicron Pi Kappa Phi chapter. I was talking with their treasurer over dinner about how their chapter was structured. They currently have 80 active brothers, and live in a big southern looking mansion. The dues they need to maintain their social schedule and their house are astonishing. I’m going to stop whining about paying mine.

The day ended with some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the people who were racked today are all allowed to ride tomorrow. The bad news is that our curfew is going to be 9:30PM for the next week. This means we’ll be missing going out in Birmingham and Atlanta, two of the more exciting layover days.
